Occasionally mods will be allowing a set number of characters to schedule an involved conversation with a mod regarding the discovery of something in game, as announced on the OOC community or on a mod log. Characters who have signed up for the option will be selected via RNG (with preference given to characters who have not yet had a thread like this), and the thread will be conducted on this page.
You can see a sample thread in the comments below, but in essence, this thread is meant to mimic the conversation a tabletop player might have with their DM. The mod will establish the setting, and you may describe your character's actions and decisions. The mod will respond with reactions and any particular consequences, and the mod and player will move throughout the scenario together, until all questions are satisfied and all actions are taken.
After this informational thread is complete, it's assumed that anything learned within is now common knowledge for the rest of the game. You're still welcome to thread out discussion or discovery of this ICly, but if you'd like to skip ahead to any fallout or follow-up action, that's also fine.
As a note, these threads do not have to be limited to one character in the scene. For the ease of moving threads along quickly, we ask that one player take the reins in terms of writing out the actions of all characters involved in the scene. We have a channel reserved in the Discord channel limited to current thread participants to facilitate OOC discussion of who's doing what for this purpose.
We love ominous staircases, but before we start peering into the darkness, is there anything left behind in this transport area? Any leftover cargo, units for transporting cargo? Or just a big empty space?
There is a pretty typical array here — storage bins, wheeled carts, something that may once have been a forklift, computer banks. Anything metal is gone, but few things were entirely metal, so the original use and design can still be made out. If dug through, the cargo is fairly varied — clothing, building materials, lumber (mostly gone), mostly empty boxes that must have contained metals, food (all rotted, much of it gone), cement, coal, etc.
Crymaria rifles long enough to get a sense of what's there, making note especially of the coal remainders. It's a really crude energy source, but it could be useful, so she'll set it off to the side for now.
After a cursory examination of the possibly-an-elevator, she'll approach the staircase. Since she is ready for danger she will be keeping her powers at the ready, meaning she has activated her FUCK YOU BLUE GLOW for light. Providing she can see, she will investigate the staircase.
The staircase is empty and silent, as far as she can tell. It’s a zigzagging pattern as one would find in the stairwell of a multistory building, with no lights or handrail. There are, however, divots to suggest there once was a handrail, and several smashed sconces to suggest it was probably once adequately lit.
"Just what is this place, boy?" Because when it's dark and lonely we talk to our pupper.
After a moment, she will continue up the stairs, pausing about halfway up the next flight to look up (in case she can see how high it goes between the stairs or something...you know what I'm describing, right, like one of those staircases). But then she'll keep going no matter what. Butt gains.
There isn’t much of a gap between the flights to see up, it’s just a whole lot of darkness. And she’ll be walking for a while if she continues — it would be about 15 floors’ worth of stairs in all, before finally something changes: she reaches the end.
The end turns out to be a wide and tall doorway, the door closed, with a faint light along the edges and the smell of the mountainside open air gently wafting in.
A very excited Fenrir will paw at the door for walkies, but Crymaria won't try to open it just yet. She'll put her hand on it and lean her ear against it. Can she hear anything inside or beyond the door?
It seems to be locked with a bolt, with a keycard pad to the left of it, for fairly average security. It can be locked or unlocked from either side, but would require that hypothetical keycard to do so.
Crymaria politely asks Fenrir to run downstairs to see if anybody left their keycard in one of the machines downstairs, like maybe a forklift driver had a hole in his pocket or something.
Meanwhile, she'll be trying to force the bolt open w/ the bottom end of her multi-ray staff.
Unfortunately it doesn't matter what Fenrir finds.
Because, assuming the bolt refuses to yield, Crymaria literally just shoots it with her power, though she doesn't seem to be aware of doing so right away.
Good job Crymaria, there is a crack as the bolt breaks. The door then pushes open — slightly. It swings about a half inch out, and immediately knocks into something solid, which stops it from opening any further.
Crymaria is a Valkyria. She is the strongest Valkyria. Everyone here thinks she is weak and useless and worthless even if they don't say it to her face and she is not about to let some SHIT on the other side of this DOOR stop her.
It turns out that the door doesn’t stand up very well to this. There’s a cracking sound, and the door explodes outward — along with the rocks that had been piled against it to keep it closed.
On the other side of the door is a plateau on the mountainside, relatively flat and quite wide, about 200 feet wide and long. Areas of the stone are clearly marked with straight painted lines, and various structures are set up at regular intrevals — charging stations, as sometimes found within the city itself, although these seem to be geared toward larger vehicles. There are no roads or paths leading away from this field, only rocky mountainside past the defined edges of it. An elevated box of a small room sits at the center of the field, overlooking the area, situated about 20 feet above the ground level on sturdy stone slats.
Speaking of vehicles, there aren’t any present. The entire area is space and machinery to accomidate them, but utterly devoid of any of the vehicles themselves.
It’s probably about then that Fenrir finds a keycard dropped near the entrance of the freight area. Good boy.
She'll probably stay out here for a moment and take in the scenery as she walks towards a charging station. Will she spot anything beside general mountain landcape?
Beyond that, are the charging stations up here operable?
If her sense of direction is good, she’ll note that she seems to be on the lip of the cave above the cavern, and walking toward the edge would overlook the exteror, walled portion. The scenery seems fairly quiet and expected, although a few of the metal bushes and general undergrowth has begun encroaching toward the pad, as it has toward the wall below.
She would inspect the device in general to see if there was anything around the area, then start pressing some buttons. So, not a particularly purposeful attempt to use it but just seeing if it can be turned on.
Most of the buttons don’t do anything, but one of the random hits starts the machine quietly rumbling, and a few lights flare on. It seems it is operational.
